Emily Niven, Geography
Mrs Niven graduated from the University of Chester with her BSc (Hons) in Geography and Sports Science. She then went on to complete her PGC in Community Sports Development at the Bolton Institute.
Mrs Niven explained “I enjoyed studying in further education, mainly enjoying the challenges, but also meeting new people and gaining new experiences. My most memorable experience was studying glacial moraines in Jostedalsbreen in Norway, for a month, for my dissertation, and then gaining an excellent grade for it!”
“I then worked as a Sports Development Officer at Carlisle City Council, and I really enjoyed working with schools and young people. So I realised that teaching would be a great career path”. Mrs Niven then enrolled on her PGCE in Secondary Geography at St. Martins, Lancaster, and enjoyed her placements to schools in Lancaster and Cumbria.
Mrs Niven started teaching in 2007 and has been at Lathallan for over five years. “My first impression of Lathallan was ‘Hogwarts’ - it was warm and welcoming and made nice shortbread! The best thing about the school is the surroundings and the view from my classroom”.
As well as teaching, Mrs Niven is also a bit of an adrenaline seeker and has done a bungee jump in NZ and a sky dive from 10,000ft at St. Andrews. Her main passions include enjoying outdoor life with her border terrier Nala, and Italian food!
