Senior Daily Curriculum Routine

"The schools curriculum offers very good opportunities for young people

to develop their individual talents and

qualities and prepares them well for life beyond school."  HMIe

We believe our school day reflects both our holistic credentials and core aims of focusing on the individual student, inspiring and challenging them.

S2 Course:

This contains a broad range of subjects and includes English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, French, Spanish, Geography, History, Religious Moral and Philosophical Studies, Personal and Social Development, Tutorial, ICT, Art, Music, Drama, PE/Sport, Enterprise, Outdoor Education and Service.

S3, 4 & 5 Courses:

Starting at 8:30am, lessons are taught predominately in the Castle with specialist rooms for Music, the Sciences and Art located out with. No class has more than 16 students in it whilst some work on a one to one basis with tutors in examination year groups. Students are taken beyond the remit of the Common Entrance syllabus (followed by Lathallan pupils in P7-S1) and use the Curriculum for Excellence during S2 to help ease progression to our chosen SQA examination subjects in S3. At present, 17 subject options are offered with students selecting eight from:

  • English & Maths (both compulsory)
  • Chemistry, Physics & Biology (one science compulsory)
  • Spanish & French (one language compulsory)
  • Managing Environmental Resource
  • Geography
  • History
  • Classical Studies
  • Business Studies
  • Information Systems
  • Art
  • Music
  • Drama
  • PE
  • PSHE

Support for learning is available for all and is again integrated into the curriculum as required.

Pupils will sit their SQA exams in May during S4 and then at Higher and Advanced Higher Levels in S5 and S6 respectively.

Our school community has the opportunity to gather together during assemblies and tutorials enable individuals to have specific contact time with an appointed member of staff.

Although the levels of taught Games decreases in S5 & S6 there is still space in the curriculum for various enrichment courses such as in Civilianship as well as Service, Enterprise, Outdoor Education and Choir being incorporated into the timetable.  Senior pupils also contribute a proportion of their time and energy to volunteering in the local community.

Innovative features:

  • Outdoor Education embedded within the curriculum S1-3
  • Service embedded within the curriculum S2-5
  • Civilianship & focus on health and well being
  • Active learning in Academic trips throughout, e.g., MER, Music, Classical Studies
  • Role of Games/PE in curriculum (S2-4 x4 per week)
  • After School activity programme, e.g., archery& warhammer
  • Cross-curricular activities, e.g., “Forensic Rookies” & Eco-Days
  • Introduction of MER to reinforce environmental focus of school

Extra-Curricular Activities

"Children and young people benefit from an excellent choice

of musical and sporting activities."  HMIe

As with the Prep School, “Extra-curricular activities” is rather a misnomer as these “extra” activities form an integral part of a Lathallan education. The ethos of Lathallan aims to inspire and challenge every individual and, for this, a wide range of opportunities is available. What is certain is that these extra curricular activities can greatly enhance any pupil’s feeling of self-esteem and achievement, which may, in turn, enhance their progress and development in other areas of school life.

There are opportunities for all students to undertake private music tuition during the course of the school day with our visiting specialist staff. Many of our senior pupils perform regularly with our own long established Pipe Band. The Pipes and Drums play at a number of charity, sporting and tourist venues around Scotland.  More recently, they marched before Her Majesty the Queen at the opening of the Scottish Parliament! Additionally they played for His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent during a visit to Lathallan, to celebrate the school’s 75th anniversary, and performed in front of His Royal Highness the Duke of York in Montrose.

All Senior School pupils participate in either Games or PE everyday. They are given the opportunity to represent the School at rugby, hockey, netball, cricket, tennis, cross-country or athletics. Pupils are given the opportunity to develop both their individual and team skills and attain the honour of captaincy. Matches are played regularly both locally and across Scotland. We are proud to have our pupils playing hockey at both national and regional level.

Formal lessons finish at 5:00pm but students may opt to stay on to take part in a variety of evening activities and clubs ranging from sports, both indoor and out, to rock climbing, literary club and riding. Supervised study and an evening meal are also available to day pupils while other pupils opt to spend the night with us on a regular or flexi- basis, to meet the demands of busy family lives.
