School Life

Children may join Lathallan School at any stage of their school life, subject to space in the appropriate class, although the most popular years of entry are into Pre-Prep 1 (Primary 1), Form 3 (Primary 5) and Form 5 (Primary 7). Some children join us from our own adjacent Springboard Nursery where the Pre-School class teacher works closely with School teaching staff to ensure a seamless transition into school. Class sizes are limited to 16 and some year groups have more than one class. The school day for all pupils starts at 8.30am with whole school assembly on Monday and Thursday.

Children in our pre-prep department spend their time predominantly with their class teacher supported by a classroom assistant, although French, Music and Drama are taught by specialist staff. By the time children reach Primary 3 they move into Form 1 of the main Preparatory School and whilst still spending most of their time with a class teacher, begin to integrate more fully with the upper part of the school, with specialist teachers taking over Art, Music, Drama, French, IT and Sports. Pupils in Forms 1 and 2 (Primary 3 and 4) play in their first sports matches at Under 9 level and have the opportunity to take a wider part in school life. The school day for pupils from Primary 1 to 4 ends at 3.40pm, although there are optional after school clubs and activities.

Our Form 3 pupils (Primary 5) now move around the school for lessons from specialist staff and are encouraged to start to take responsibility for their own personal organisation, such as maintaining a homework diary, organising sports kit and reading and noting information regarding sports teams, music lessons and other school events.  This format continues through the prep-school until Form 6 (S1) when pupils either move into Lathallan Senior School or to their chosen senior school. The children play sports each afternoon and have the opportunity to represent the school in matches across Scotland, usually on Wednesday afternoons, but also on Saturdays. The school day now finishes at 5.00pm for these pupils, although they may stay for an hour to complete homework, stay for tea and activities and clubs or even spend the night in the boarding house. New pupils are always warmly welcomed and given a “buddy” for the first few weeks while they find their way around our site and adjust to new routines.
