The Lathallan Association exists to promote social activities for families and staff at the school and coordinates a range of inclusive events throughout the school year. The activities of the Association are coordinated through a committee, which includes both parent and staff members. The Committee typically meets once each term and the AGM is held in May, this is when members of the Association are elected to sit on the Committee. With such a large catchment area it can prove a challenge to meet easily socially and so at the start of each term, the Association hosts “Tea in the Castle” for all parents as a way of introducing new parents to the school and staff and giving current parents a chance to meet up. Other events have included an end of year ceilidh, a race night, a quiz night and a bonfire night with fireworks. The Association also runs Cycling Proficiency training for interested children as an after-school activity during the summer term.
In 2004, the Association held a mini Highland Games, to which local schools were invited. This event has grown to become the key event in the Association calendar and provides a wide range of benefits to the school.
The primary objective of the Association is not to raise funds. Rather, it focuses on organising inclusive events that may have a surplus, which contributes towards school projects. As well as contributing to the school, the Association also makes donations to other charities.
Over the last three years, the Association has contributed over £5,000 to the school, which has gone towards non-core ‘extras’. Examples include an interactive whiteboard, DVD recorders, a television, a digital camera, tables for the garden, a trip to the theatre for the Junior School, sports equipment and items for Art, IT and Science.
To ensure that Association Events are well promoted throughout the school and to ensure that new families are welcomed in to the school a “Form Rep” is appointed for each class in the school at the start of each school year. The role of the Form Rep includes communicating details of Association events, sharing contact details within each class and welcoming new parents.
All parents are pay a small fee to be members of the Association and all are warmly welcomed at events. Offers of help and new ideas to Committee members are always welcomed.
